NEWS UPDATE!  Start Point Lighthouse is currently CLOSED for refurbishment and update.  The iconic Fresnel Lens will be replaced by LED lights along with other improvements to aid navigation for mariners.  Once we re-open in May 2019 you will be able to see the old lens in the updated Visitor Centre.  Revisit this website for the exact open date nearer the time.

Just to whet your appetite…..Start Point Lighthouse took 40 men to build and has provided a welcome way-mark for returning sailors to the South West since it was built in 1836. And apart from confirming your position it is situated at the end of one the most exposed peninsulas on the South Devon coast, its beams and booms warn sailors of the notoriously hazardous waters around Start Point and the infamous Start Point tidal race.

Take a breath of sea air, drama, history and nature when you visit Start Point Lighthouse and climb the tower to hear breathtaking stories about storms, shipwrecks and lighthouse living – a truly enlightening experience!
